Issue Paper: Computer-Aided Mammograms and Trans-Atlantic Data Transfer Privacy Garrett Gutierrez CSE 485: Capstone I #80015 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM Introduction: As new technologies emerge, they cause new and surprising impacts on the world, which shape how people experience life. Yet, these advancements in computing and engineering may have some negative consequences. Thus, they become controversial issues. Two recent issues in the computing and engineering field are the effectiveness of computer-aided mammograms in the United States and Facebook data being used for mass surveillance on European denizens. These issues affect the areas of national healthcare and global privacy, respectively. Not only do these topics have current ramifications, they also have potential long term consequences that will need to be addressed. Thus, current leaders are taking actions to address each of these issues in order to resolve them or mitigate their adverse effects. This paper will identify each issue, its source, the current and future impact of the respective issue, and how current leaders are addressing the issues based on the facts provided by the credible news sources. Issue 1 and Source: On the national level, a contemporary issue involving computing that has arisen is the use of computer-aided mammograms in the U.S. for women’s healthcare. The dissolution of a marriage, or ‘divorce’ as it is known, was once an infrequent occurrence and often considered the failure of a wife to maintain a happy marriage (Lewis, 2013). Following a change in legislation in the 1960s that allowed partners to end their marriage without having to provide justification, in conjunction with the sexual liberation movement, the incidence of divorce more than doubled (Wilcox, 2009). According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2012), the number of marriages ending in divorce has continued to rise, however, despite an increase in social acceptance, the negative impact divorce has on children has remained prevalent (Kelly Emery, 2004). Alternatively, in order to distract themselves from emotional pain not appropriately dealt with during or following the divorce, parents may become either overbearing, or self-absorbed and less attentive towards their children (Brodkin, 2008; Taylor Andrews, 2009). During early childhood, according to Erikson’s psychosocial theory of development, children must develop a sense of self-control in order to avoid feelings of inadequacy and gain confidence in their own abilities (1977c). Overbearing parents have the potential to prevent their child from achieving autonomy, as they may be unwilling to relinquish control and allow their child to take steps towards independence, whereas inattentive parents may fail to encourage their child in activities that promote developmental growth as they are immersed in their own problems (Bacon McKenzie, 2004). In conclusion as stated in the book The State of Homelessness in America 2013 â€Å"Scant decreases in the overall size of the homeless population and the rate of homelessness between 2011 and 2012 remind us that there is still a great deal of work to be done. However, the decreases in chronic and veteran homelessness indicate that, with federal, state, and local investment in strategies proven to end homelessness, progress can be made. The ongoing and increased development of permanent supportive housing, a proven solution to ending homelessness for people with disabilities, is bringing down chronic and veteran homelessness numbers in communities across the country. †
